PhD Position Available – ANR Project PLASMA (Marne-la-Vallée, France)

A PhD position is available in Marne-la-Vallée (near Paris, France) for the ANR Project PLASMA.

In this project, we have brought together theoretical computer scientists with a shared interest in providing mathematical insights into real-world implementations. Beyond conducting detailed studies of key implementations, our primary goal is to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework for analyzing modern algorithms and data structures, which could be used to guide the evolutions of these algorithms, with an emphasis on modeling modern computer architecture. Additionally, we aim to create mathematical models that capture the key statistical properties of real-world data and validate these models against state-of-the-art implementations.

Position Details

• Duration: Full-time for 3 years, starting at the very beginning of January 2027 (or sooner).
• Location: In the Analysis of Algorithms subteam of the CS lab of Université Gustave Eiffel (5 permanent researchers and 3 PhD students).
• Co-supervision: Possibility of co-supervision with the CS lab of Université de Caen Normandie.

Research Topics

• The exact topic will be determined with the PhD student, at the boundary between:
  • the actual implementation of algorithms in contemporary programming languages,
  • the combinatorial and probabilistic tools used to analyze them.
  It can be more on the CS side or on the analysis side.
• Required Profile:
  • Specialization in algorithmics, combinatorics, or discrete probability.
  • Some notions of and an interest in all three areas.
  • Low-level programming skills are not required, but are certainly an asset for these topics.
